New sexually transmitted ringworm fungus identified in New York City
A new sexually transmitted ringworm fungus, TMVII, has been identified in five cases in New York City this year. This is the first time TMVII has been detected in the United States, having previously been found in Europe and Asia. The fungus spreads primarily through sexual contact and has caused infections in cisgender men, including two individuals who had sex with each other. All infected individuals have been treated successfully, though some needed multiple antifungal treatments. Researchers are urging health care providers to be aware of TMVII's transmission and symptoms. They also highlight the need for public health measures to monitor and prevent its spread, as other concerning fungi like Trichophyton indotineae have also been found in the area.
