10 African countries with the lowest IMF debt in October 2026
African nations with the lowest debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as of October 2026 have been identified, offering these countries greater fiscal flexibility for domestic investment and reduced repayment burdens. The list highlights countries that have minimized their IMF obligations, which can enhance resilience against financial shocks and free up resources for infrastructure, public services, and social spending. Ghana serves as a key example, having reduced its debt-to-GDP ratio from 70.3% in 2024 to 48.8% in 2025, with its risk of debt distress upgraded from high to moderate. Experts note that lower IMF debt alone does not guarantee prosperity, as governments must also improve revenue collection and manage spending effectively. Mali is projected to see its public debt decline gradually from 41.9% of GDP in 2025 to 40.8% in 2026, supported by recovering gold production and higher fiscal revenues.
