11-year-old hockey player returns home after rehab
An 11-year-old hockey player named Mason Madden has returned home after spending three months in rehabilitation for a spinal tumor. On Friday, he left Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital surrounded by supporters, including staff and local high school hockey players. Mason, who is known for his quiet determination, was celebrated with a special graduation tunnel made of maize and blue decorations. He wheeled himself through as hospital staff tapped hockey sticks and waved pom poms in cheer. His journey began in January when he injured his leg while playing for the Grand Valley Stars. Despite treatment for a fractured femur and a diagnosis of "amplified pain syndrome," his condition did not improve. His family sought further care when Mason began losing weight and having trouble walking. An MRI revealed a spinal tumor, leading to five surgeries on his spine and brain. Now on the path to recovery, Mason is relearning how to walk. His family is excited about having him back home after a long three months apart. Mason's parents expressed joy at being together again. “Our new routine will certainly take some adjustment, but it will be awesome to be able to do it all together,” Mike Madden said. The hockey community has been very supportive, visiting him regularly during his time in the hospital.
