2024 Kia Niro PHEV functions more as a hybrid
The 2024 Kia Niro plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has been part of our long-term fleet for some time now. It has raised questions about its performance as both a hybrid and an electric vehicle. Our team’s experiences show that its functionality often depends on charging access. In our Ann Arbor office, we have many charging stations, allowing the Niro to start each workday fully charged. However, at home, only about a third of our staff can charge it overnight. Many colleagues live in apartments without charging options. Because of this, the Niro is often used as a hybrid, especially when the battery isn’t charged. One notable aspect is that while the Niro offers an estimated electric range of 33 miles, it starts running like a regular hybrid when the battery runs low. Staff members noted some driveability issues, such as the electric motor not handling power transitions as smoothly as in pure electric vehicles. The feedback on the car has been mixed, with some praising its comfortable ride and gas mileage, but others finding fault with its lack of power. After nearly 20,000 miles, the Niro has seen maintenance costs and performed well in winter conditions with new all-weather tires. The average fuel economy dropped slightly to 40 MPGe due to colder temperatures and tire resistance. Our team took it on multiple road trips, enjoying its spaciousness and comfort but also noting some design flaws, like insufficient cupholders. Despite the occasional frustrations, many staff members appreciate the flexibility of the PHEV for local errands and long drives, striking a balance between electric and gas operation. As we continue to use the Niro, we will dig deeper into how effective it is as a plug-in hybrid versus a traditional vehicle.
