2024 on track to become hottest year on record, EU scientists say
Scientists from the European Union report that 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record, with global temperatures expected to remain high into early 2025. This marks a significant increase, as average temperatures will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The previous record was held by 2023. Data from January to November confirms the rising temperatures, with November 2024 being the second warmest November recorded. Carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels are the primary driver of this climate change. Despite pledges to reduce emissions, global CO2 levels are projected to reach a new high this year. Scientists are also observing the potential development of the La Nina weather pattern in 2025, which could temporarily cool temperatures but will not reverse the long-term warming trend.
