2024 set to be hottest year on record, surpassing critical temperature threshold
PARIS: The Copernicus Climate Change Service announced that 2024 is set to be the hottest year on record, surpassing 2023. This year will also be the first to exceed a critical temperature threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The report highlights that global temperatures from January to November 2024 were nearly 1.6 degrees Celsius warmer than the pre-industrial era. Climate-related disasters this year have caused $310 billion in economic losses, affecting both rich and poor countries. Despite global pledges to reduce fossil fuel emissions, they continue to rise. Developing nations are particularly vulnerable, needing $1.3 trillion annually by 2035 for climate adaptation and energy transitions.
