21 Karnataka tribals detained in Gabon for fake visas
Twenty-one residents from Karnataka are currently detained in Libreville, Gabon. They are being held for possessing fake business visas while conducting business activities. The group includes nine people from Gopanal village and twelve from the Hakkipikki colony in Shivamogga. Their ages range from young adults to older individuals, including ten women and twelve men from tribal communities. Authorities discovered their situation after conducting police raids in the capital. Officials have taken their travel documents and charged them with visa violations. Reports indicate that the military administration in Gabon has tightened enforcement against unauthorized immigrants, particularly following recent political changes in Central Africa. The individual who allegedly issued the fake visas has also been arrested. The detainees claim they were tricked by a visa agent. This agent had helped them secure legitimate visas in the past but provided fake ones during the renewal process, leading to their current predicament. They were in Gabon to sell herbal hair oil and Ayurveda products. Initially, Central African officials demanded a penalty of Rs 200,000 for their release. This amount has since been reduced to Rs 57,000. The authorities have allowed them to contact their families in India to raise the necessary funds. Relatives and friends in Karnataka are actively working to gather the money. Puneet Kumar R, the state president of the Hakkipikki community, confirmed support from the Indian Embassy in Libreville. He expressed confidence that the government will ensure the safe return of the detained individuals. Naveen CH, a district tribal welfare officer, also reported that arrangements for flights are being finalized, with a departure planned for Saturday night. If all goes well, the group is expected to return home safely.
