4-star OL Bear McWhorter commits to Michigan over Alabama
Bear McWhorter, a four-star offensive lineman from Georgia, has committed to the University of Michigan for the Class of 2026. This decision came as a surprise, as Alabama had been his dream school since childhood. McWhorter chose Michigan over Alabama, Clemson, Florida, and South Carolina during a recent ceremony at his high school. At 6 feet 3.5 inches and weighing 293 pounds, McWhorter was a highly sought-after recruit, receiving over 40 offers since his freshman year. His family expected him to choose Alabama, but McWhorter told them the week before his announcement that he had decided on Michigan. They were surprised but supportive of his choice. McWhorter's strong relationship with Michigan's coaching staff played a significant role in his decision. He visited Ann Arbor for the first time after his freshman season and built a rapport with offensive line coach Sherrone Moore. McWhorter appreciated Moore's genuine care for his players. Multiple visits to Michigan, especially one during a home game against Oregon, solidified his interest in the program. He felt a special connection with the coaches and players during these visits. Although he has started at left tackle in high school, he is expected to play in the interior positions for Michigan, where his versatility will be valuable. Michigan's recruitment for the 2026 class has been slow so far, with McWhorter becoming just their third commitment. He plans to take an active role in recruiting other top players, aiming to build a strong offensive line group. "I want to be the leader and the main guy," he said, as he reaches out to other prospects to join him at Michigan.
