4,000 mu'takifs join spiritual retreat in Medina
The Prophet’s Mosque in Medina has welcomed 4,000 mu’takifs, or spiritual retreat participants, from 120 countries. This marks the beginning of the last ten days of Ramadan, a significant time for worship and reflection in Islam. Iʿtikāf is a period when Muslims dedicate themselves to prayer and Quran recitation while avoiding distractions. This year, the mosque has designated specific areas for these worshippers, including the western roof and sections near certain gates. To support the mu’takifs, the General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques has set up various services. These include service desks, luggage storage, medical clinics, and first aid stations. Multilingual support is also available for the diverse group participating in the retreat. Additionally, the mosque provides religious lessons, daily breaking of the fast meals, and personal care kits. Mobile charging stations are also accessible. Each mu’takif receives a bracelet for entry into certain areas, helping to organize their experience and ensure they can access all available services.
