A recent poll by the Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association found that 47% of families with children who have special educational needs (SEN) reported facing rude public reactions. This includes stares, teasing, and scolding. The survey included 520 parents of SEN children and 619 members of the public. Among those families, 43% experienced uncomfortable stares, 32% reported mocking, and nearly 30% faced verbal abuse. The poll also revealed that three out of five public respondents blamed poor parenting for disruptive behavior in children. Only extreme behaviors were more likely to be recognized as related to SEN.
