67% of PC gaming time spent on older titles
A new report from Newzoo shows that most gamers are still playing older games. During a presentation at the Games Developer Conference, the company shared data from its latest gaming industry report. According to the report, in 2024, 67% of all hours spent on PC games were on titles that are at least six years old. Popular games like Counter Strike 2, League of Legends, and Fortnite topped the list. Only 8% of playtime was on new games released in 2024. On gaming consoles, the trend is similar but slightly less pronounced. For PlayStation and Xbox, about 44% and 49% of game time was on older games, respectively. Around 15% of total playtime on consoles went to 2024 releases. The report indicates that players are spending more time on fewer games, with an average of ten games played per person on major platforms like Steam and PlayStation. It suggests that this focus is making it harder for new games to reach audiences. In financial terms, the report states that console revenue from full-price games fell by 14% compared to 2023. This decline is attributed to 2024 not having as many hit titles as the previous year, which featured popular games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Spider-Man 3.
