71-year-old man arrested for DUI in Mount Pleasant
A 71-year-old man was charged with DUI after an unusual driving incident in Mount Pleasant on March 19. The driver made an 80-mile trip and was pulled over for changing lanes without signaling and stopping at a green light. When police approached the man, they noticed he appeared confused. He had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. He mistakenly thought he was in Murrells Inlet, which is far from Mount Pleasant. He admitted to drinking several vodka drinks at a bar in Garden City and claimed he was dropping off a friend. However, when asked about the friend, he could not remember their name. During field sobriety tests, the driver struggled to follow directions and stumbled multiple times. He declined to complete some of the tests, citing a bad back. Police found a receipt from a bar that showed he had ordered four bottles of Champagne and a drink of Tito's vodka. At the police station, the man acknowledged he was drunk. He also requested that police contact his wife. When she was called, she expressed anger towards her husband and the police. The driver refused to take a breathalyzer test and faced a suspension of his driving license.
