82% of fans prioritize club success over country
Football fans have taken part in a survey to settle the ongoing debate between club and country loyalty. Conducted by talkSPORT, the poll revealed that 82% of fans prefer their clubs over their national teams. The survey included 503 fans and showed that only 13% of respondents favored national team success. Just 5% were neutral on the issue. Many fans said their connection to clubs is stronger because they attend matches regularly and feel a personal bond. Some fans criticized international fixtures, saying they disrupt the regular football schedule. One supporter expressed their preference for club football, stating that it is more consistent and engaging. However, a few fans did argue in favor of national pride. They highlighted the sense of togetherness during international tournaments, emphasizing that success for the national team can unite the country. The data also showed that 96% of respondents are passionate about club football, far more than for international games. In terms of viewership, 56% watch every club match, compared to only 30% who follow international fixtures. When asked about a choice between England winning the World Cup or their club winning the FA Cup, 59% chose the international victory. Yet, 41% still favored their club's triumph, citing the rarity of World Cup victories and their club's past successes. The current England squad has mixed reviews, with only 53% of fans expressing love for the team. Some fans are unhappy with the squad selection and say the team lacks the drive to win. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, the sentiment towards the England team might change, but for now, club football reigns supreme among fans.
