84-year-old woman avoids jail for stabbing husband
An 84-year-old woman in Scotland has avoided jail time after she stabbed her husband while he was in bed. Annie Hillen attacked her husband James, 81, during a disagreement at their home in Glasgow on August 4, 2022. She used a kitchen knife and also attempted to smother him with a pillow. The couple had been married for 50 years. After the attack, James managed to disarm her and call for help. Fortunately, his injuries were minor, and he received treatment at a hospital. Initially facing a charge of attempted murder, Hillen pled guilty to a lesser charge of assault. During the court proceedings, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the crime while noting her progress in handling mental health and alcohol issues. Instead of prison time, Hillen has been placed under supervision for three years and must wear a tag that restricts her movements at night. She currently lives in a care home, and her husband has stated he cannot continue to live with her. Despite the circumstances, Hillen expressed regret about the incident, suggesting she hoped for a chance to mend their relationship. However, a non-harassment order was issued, preventing her from contacting him. Hillen's case will be reviewed later this year.
