873 arrested in drug crackdown in recent weeks
In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, authorities in the State have arrested 873 individuals in just two weeks. This effort is part of Operation Clean Slate, initiated by the Excise department to address increasing drug-related incidents. Between March 5 and March 19, a total of 874 drug-related cases were filed. During this period, 901 people were officially charged. Excise officials conducted over 6,500 raids and collaborated with other agencies for 177 inspections. Officials inspected around 60,240 vehicles, seizing 46 that were found to be carrying drugs. They also captured 49 suspects who had been evading arrest in various cases. Narcotics worth approximately ₹2.37 crore were confiscated, including MDMA, methamphetamine, heroin, and significant amounts of cannabis in different forms. In addition to vehicle inspections, Excise officials carried out 1,763 checks at schools, along with inspections at bus stands, railway stations, and labor camps. School surveillance efforts will be increased next week. Excise Minister M.B. Rajesh has instructed officials to remain vigilant at the State's borders. The department has also made progress in related areas, registering 800 Abkari cases and arresting 734 of the 765 accused. Additionally, 3,688 tobacco cases were addressed, leading to charges against 3,635 individuals and the seizure of over 465 kg of tobacco products.
