9-year-old girl found dead in Manipur relief camp
A nine-year-old girl was found dead at a relief camp in Churachandpur, Manipur, late on Thursday night. She had been missing since 6:30 PM that evening, prompting her parents and others to search for her. The girl's body showed signs of injury to her neck and there were bloodstains nearby, raising concerns among her family and community members. Both her parents and the Zomi Mothers' Association accused someone of murdering her. Authorities have opened a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. This law carries severe penalties, including a minimum of 20 years in prison, and can result in life imprisonment. The headmistress of her school, Way Mark Academy, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. She said the school community stood with the grieving family during this difficult time. The Zomi Mothers' Association condemned the alleged murder and called for justice. The Young Vaiphei Association also denounced the incident and urged a thorough police investigation. The incident highlights the ongoing struggles in Manipur, where over 50,000 people have been displaced due to ethnic violence since May 2023. Many children, like the victim, are trying to continue their education while living in relief camps.
