A new study from the University of Southampton reveals that nearly one in ten people in England may have Long Covid but are uncertain about it. The research analyzed data from the NHS and highlighted that 4.8% of respondents reported having Long Covid. Certain groups, such as those living in deprived areas and individuals with long-term conditions, showed higher rates. The findings were published in the journal Health Expectations on March 18. Professor Nisreen A Alwan, a leading researcher on Long Covid, noted that those already facing disadvantages in society are more likely to be affected. She emphasized the importance of improving diagnosis, treatment, and support for these individuals. Long Covid is a condition that can follow a COVID-19 infection, causing symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and brain fog. The researchers examined over 750,000 responses to the GP Patient Survey to assess the prevalence of Long Covid and factors related to it. Young adults under 25, men, and certain ethnic minorities were more likely to be uncertain about their Long Covid status. The study suggested that men might avoid seeking medical advice, which could explain their uncertainty. Stigma and self-doubt may also play a role in deterring people from getting a diagnosis. PhD student Mirembe Woodrow, who conducted the analysis, expressed surprise at the level of uncertainty regarding Long Covid. She emphasized the need for greater awareness and improved access to care to prevent increased health disparities in the UK. The latest survey data indicated little change in Long Covid prevalence and uncertainty since last year, prompting plans for further research to understand the issues leading to inequality in its impact and support.
