Nigeria introduces new meningitis vaccine to combat deadly outbreaks
Nigeria has introduced a new five-in-one meningitis vaccine, Men5CV, becoming the first country in Africa to do so. The vaccine protects against five deadly strains of meningococcus bacteria. Recent outbreaks in Nigeria led to 153 deaths out of 1742 suspected cases. Bacterial meningitis is a leading cause of death in children under 5 in Africa. The vaccine rollout is funded by Gavi and aims to eliminate meningitis by 2030.
