Aavin aims to double milk procurement in Tirunelveli

A meeting led by District Collector R. Sukumar aimed to boost Aavin's milk procurement in Tirunelveli district. The goal is to raise daily procurement from 32,000 liters to 70,000 liters. Currently, Aavin collects milk from farmers through 157 cooperative societies in the area. Dr. Sukumar noted that, despite high demand from consumers, all milk collected is sold. To meet the demand, new milk cooperative societies will be set up in each revenue village. If 25 farmers join, they can form a society to supply milk to Aavin. Each village is expected to contribute at least 200 liters of milk a day, with farmers receiving payments weekly. The Collector also mentioned support for farmers, including loans through cooperatives and insurance for their milch animals. A appeal was made to encourage farmers to supply milk to Aavin. Competition from private companies and the summer heat are affecting milk production and supply. Many farmers are tempted by offers from private firms, which typically sell milk at higher prices. Despite challenges, Aavin aims to keep milk prices low for consumers at ₹16 per liter, below other market prices. A senior Aavin official emphasized the importance of ensuring a steady supply while maintaining affordability for consumers.
