Abalos advocates removing fuel tax to lower electricity costs
Former DILG Secretary Atty. Benjamin "Benhur" Abalos Jr. is pushing for economic reforms to lower electricity costs in the Philippines. He explained his ideas during a rally in Trece Martires, Cavite, where he received support from local residents. Abalos advocates for the removal of fuel taxes for power generation. He believes this will reduce electricity prices and attract more manufacturing companies to the country. With cheaper electricity, he argues, jobs will be created for Filipinos. Abalos is concerned that high electricity rates, which are among the highest in Asia, make it difficult for the Philippines to attract investors. He stated that eliminating taxes on fuel used for power generation could significantly lower electricity charges. Abalos also criticized the value-added tax (VAT) on electricity, saying he has been against it since 2005. Abalos provided figures showing that some regions pay between P17 to P19 per kilowatt hour for electricity, compared to around P11 in Metro Manila. He promised to push for laws that would remove VAT on electricity and specific fuel taxes if he is elected to the Senate. In addition to addressing electricity costs, Abalos emphasized the need for improvements in the business environment. He suggested using digital technology to speed up business processes and reduce bureaucratic delays. He believes these changes would foster a more business-friendly climate in the Philippines.
