ABC13 studios inspire design of Houston's iconic Astrodome
The Houston Astrodome, opened on April 9, 1965, was inspired by the design of ABC13's studios, which featured a domed roof. Judge Roy Hofheinz admired the studios during their groundbreaking in 1960 and sought to create a similar indoor stadium for Houston's new baseball team. The Astrodome included clear glass panels to allow grass to grow on the field. However, during the first game, players struggled to see the ball due to reflections and glare, leading to the glass being painted over and the introduction of AstroTurf. Originally named the Colt .45s, the baseball team changed its name to the Houston Astros due to a lawsuit. This name change meant the stadium was named the Astrodome instead of the Coltdome.
