Abortion rights advocates win in four states while Florida rejects key measure
Abortion rights advocates achieved significant victories in four states on Tuesday, including Missouri, where voters approved an amendment that allows for the potential repeal of one of the strictest abortion bans in the U.S. However, Florida voters rejected a similar measure, maintaining a law that limits most abortions after six weeks. In addition to Missouri, abortion rights amendments passed in Colorado and Maryland, while New York approved a measure banning discrimination based on pregnancy outcomes. The Missouri amendment enables lawmakers to restrict abortions after a fetus is viable, but existing bans will require court challenges to be overturned. The Florida defeat marks a shift in the state's abortion landscape, as it is the first state to reject an abortion rights measure since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Currently, 13 states enforce total abortion bans, while others have varying restrictions.
