Abu Mohammed al-Golani declares overthrow of Assad's regime in Syria
Abu Mohammed al-Golani, leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has announced the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria. This marks a significant shift as Golani, once a shadowy figure, has emerged as a prominent leader in the insurgency. HTS, previously known as the Nusra Front, has rebranded since severing ties with al Qaeda in 2016. Golani has sought to reassure Syrian minorities, emphasizing protection and inclusion in a future Syria, contrasting with the group's earlier hardline image. The takeover culminated in the capture of Damascus, with Golani actively participating in military operations and public appearances. HTS has established governance in rebel-held areas, adopting symbols of the broader Syrian uprising while maintaining a complex relationship with its past affiliations.
