Activists in Tiruchi petition against reckless bus driving
Activists in the city have called for urgent action against reckless driving by private bus drivers. They submitted a petition to Commissioner of Police N. Kamini, expressing concerns over dangerous driving that has led to several fatal accidents. The group includes C. Balasubramanian, advisor of District Exnora, H. Ghouse Baig, secretary of the Consumer Protection Council, and K.C. Neelamegham, state treasurer of Makkal Sakthi Iyyakam. They reported a rise in accidents since January, highlighting a serious threat to road users. The activists claimed that the police have ignored this ongoing problem, despite discussions in the Road Safety Council meetings. They expressed frustration that no real steps have been taken to address it. To improve safety, the petition proposes several measures. These include installing speed governors on all town buses, adding surveillance cameras, and building speed breakers in areas with a high accident risk, such as near hospitals, schools, and narrow roads. The activists have also urged officials to enforce strict penalties for reckless drivers. They recommend regular alcohol checks for drivers, banning mobile phone use while driving, and launching awareness campaigns for drivers and traffic personnel.
