Activists protest against proposed Rushikulya river dam
Activists and locals began a 10-day padyatra on Sunday to oppose a proposed dam over the Rushikulya river in Ganjam district. The march will cover 120 km, starting from Pipalapanka and ending at Prayagi. The dam is intended to supply water for industries near Chhatrapur. Activists argue it will harm irrigation for farmers downstream and affect drinking water supplies in Berhampur and nearby towns. The government plans to build the dam at Pipalapanka, costing around Rs 1,035 crore. Forest clearance is still pending. An engineer stated the project aims to enhance irrigation in the area.
