Advanced communication tools essential for disaster management
Special Chief Secretary R.P. Sisodia recently held a meeting to discuss disaster management preparations for the upcoming heatwave and monsoon season. He highlighted the need for advanced communication tools to better manage disasters. Mr. Sisodia stated that officials, from local revenue officers to district collectors in coastal areas, should have satellite phones to improve response efforts. The meeting reviewed how resources have been used over the past five years and assessed what more is needed for the upcoming seasons. Additionally, the officials looked into the availability of manpower, equipment, and the operational status of cyclone warning centers. They emphasized the importance of air quality monitoring equipment near hazardous factories to quickly detect gas leaks. Mr. Sisodia also stressed the importance of utilizing drone technology. If purchasing drones independently is not possible, he suggested having trained drone pilots ready to assist. He recommended integrating WhatsApp services into disaster management efforts and developing an AI-based system to enhance response capabilities. To further improve monitoring and preparedness, he called for the activation of a GIS platform before the monsoon and encouraged the use of IoT devices for real-time data collection. Finally, Mr. Sisodia requested a detailed report on the World Bank-funded Andhra Pradesh Disaster Recovery Project (APDRP) to review equipment and resources available. He urged improvements to the existing disaster management app to better serve the community. The meeting included participation from various officials, including Ronanki Kurmanath, the Managing Director of the Disaster Management Authority.
