Advocate pushes for better lung safety education
An advocate for marine safety in Newfoundland and Labrador is now focusing on lung safety as he awaits a double lung transplant. Merv Wiseman, a resident of North Harbour, has spent over 30 years promoting safety in marine industries. He is now facing his own health challenges due to pulmonary fibrosis, a disease that severely affects lung function. Wiseman's condition makes it difficult for him to breathe and has been linked to his past work on a fox farm. He has been approved for a double lung transplant and will soon move to Toronto to stay near the hospital while he waits for the procedure. He described this journey as an unforeseen adventure, but one he is ready to tackle. During an interview, Wiseman shared his belief that more education is needed about lung safety in various jobs. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures, such as wearing dust masks, to protect workers’ health. He feels strongly that he has a mission to raise awareness about these risks. As he prepares for surgery, Wiseman is grateful for the community's support. A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $14,000 to help cover his moving expenses to Toronto. He expressed deep appreciation for the messages and donations he has received. Wiseman hopes to be in Toronto by the end of March as he continues his advocacy work for lung safety.
