AEDs installed in five Medina, Ohio parks

Automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) are now available at five parks in Medina, Ohio. This improvement comes from a grant provided by the Cleveland Clinic Strategic Priorities Fund. Parks and Recreation Director Jansen Wehrley noted that the AEDs were placed in parks where sports activities take place. The city is also coordinating with head coaches from various sports associations to ensure they receive training on how to use the AEDs. The addition of AEDs is part of a new requirement from Ohio House Bill 47, which mandates their presence in public recreational areas. The Cleveland Clinic granted $11,100 in January to purchase the five AEDs and secure them in lockable cabinets at three of the five parks. At two parks, the AEDs will be stored in open storage buildings during sporting events, ensuring easy access for sports association members. For the other three parks, the AEDs will be kept in climate-controlled cabinets, available year-round. In an emergency, individuals can approach the cabinet, call 911, and receive a code from the dispatcher to unlock and access the AED. This initiative aims to improve safety for park users and athletes in the community.
