Agam Berger emphasizes faith after surviving Hamas captivity

Agam Berger, a 20-year-old former Israeli hostage, has returned home after spending 482 days in captivity in Gaza. She was taken by Hamas during an attack on October 7, 2023, along with other soldiers. Agam’s release was part of a ceasefire agreement announced last week. In a recent synagogue ceremony in Tel Aviv, Agam spoke emotionally about her experience. She expressed gratitude to God and made a heartfelt plea for the 59 other hostages still held by Hamas. "We won’t rest until they all return," she said. Agam's mother, Merav Berger, shared how faith helped them during the ordeal. She started observing the Sabbath for her daughter's sake, even before knowing if Agam was alive. Their family was traditionally Jewish but not strictly religious. Merav noted that Agam found strength in her faith even while in captivity. During her time as a hostage, Agam was given a prayer book, which helped her mark Jewish holidays and maintain her faith. Despite the challenging conditions, she remained hopeful, clinging to the belief that she would eventually return home. As the situation worsened, Agam faced various challenges from her captors. Even when her friends were released, she struggled with despair. She believed she would be home in time for significant family events, but she missed them. After her release, Agam was reunited with her family amidst joy but kept her focus on the others still detained. Agam also inspired her younger sister Bar to enlist in the military despite her initial decision not to. Bar joined the army a few days after Agam returned, hoping to honor her sister's promise to her fellow hostages. Now that she is home, Agam remains vocal about her commitment to help other hostages. She stated firmly, "We won’t rest until every soul—living or dead—comes home." Her mother emphasized that their mission to secure the return of the remaining hostages is vital for the spirit of their people.
