AI Alliance grows to over 140 members in 2024

In its first year, the AI Alliance has quickly grown to over 140 members, focusing on creating a collaborative and open AI environment. Founded in December 2023 by IBM, Meta, and other organizations, the alliance aims to democratize AI by fostering open-source development. Previously, AI development was fragmented and dominated by large tech companies. With the release of new open-source models in 2023, including Meta's Llama 2, the landscape began to change. The AI Alliance has set ambitious goals, such as promoting collaboration, establishing governance standards, and supporting educational initiatives. To join the AI Alliance, organizations must align with its mission of safety and innovation. Members contribute to diverse projects and share a reputation in the open AI community. The alliance has identified six key focus areas, including skills development, trust and safety, and applications. Some collaborative projects have shown the benefits of this partnership. The SemiKong model, for example, was developed to assist the semiconductor industry, accelerating device development using specialized AI knowledge. Another project, DANA, combines reasoning and planning tools with machine learning to improve accuracy in various applications. As of 2025, the AI Alliance has over 1,200 collaborators working on more than 90 projects and has engaged with communities across 10 countries. Looking ahead, it aims to significantly increase its reach and impact, focusing on climate change and continuing to improve the safety and effectiveness of AI technologies. The AI Alliance is positioned to expand rapidly, inspired by successful open-source organizations. Its commitment to collaboration and development reflects its goal to play a major role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
