AI tools streamline travel planning but have limitations
More travelers are using AI tools to plan trips, saving time and effort. Tools like ChatGPT, Vacay, and GuideGeek can generate itineraries quickly. A recent report found that 44% of American and European travelers plan to use AI for travel this year, up from 27% last year. I tested ChatGPT for a weekend trip to Tallinn, Estonia. I also checked Vacay and GuideGeek for comparison. After booking our hotel, I asked these platforms to create a three-day, budget-friendly plan. All three suggested similar activities, but I found ChatGPT offered the most interesting options. The itinerary included popular sites like Tallinn's Old Town, various museums, and parks. We enjoyed several of the recommended places, including a defensive tower and Kadriorg Park, which was lovely in early March. The local market provided tasty food and unique crafts. However, I faced challenges with restaurant suggestions. My husband and I had specific dietary preferences, and many recommendations included traditional dishes we didn’t like, such as pancakes and red meat. Adjusting our criteria sometimes led to less interesting options, and outdated information caused issues too. Some recommended restaurants were closed when we visited. Travel expert Coco Tran noted AI can't replace real travel experience. AI can miss updates like seasonal changes or specific local policies. It’s essential to verify details and customize AI-generated plans. While AI can help kickstart your itinerary, personal research is still crucial for a smooth trip.
