Aiken Horse Show set to proceed in Hitchcock Woods

Hitchcock Woods is preparing for the Aiken Horse Show, despite the damage caused by Hurricane Helene last September. The hurricane struck Florida as a Category 4 storm, then weakened as it passed Aiken. The horse show is set for March 28-30 and serves as a key fundraiser for the Hitchcock Woods Foundation. Cleanup efforts are still ongoing, but driving access to the event will be easy, according to Executive Director Mary Katherine Philipp. She mentioned that the show ring has been restored after the hurricane, including the rebuilding of the announcer’s hut. The Aiken Hounds helped fund this rebuild, which was not insured. Volunteers are also helping clear debris from the area. The competition will start at 8:30 a.m. daily, featuring both amateur and professional riders. Admission is free, but a parking donation of $10 per day or $25 for all three days is requested. Philipp invites everyone to enjoy the event and explore the beauty of the woods. Visitors can bring their own food and drinks for a picnic. There will also be food vendors present on different days. A big white tent will host daily luncheons, and it will display items for silent auctions, including trophies that Philipp said are “spectacular.” The Aiken Horse Show has a tradition spanning over 100 years. It features various classes, including special competitions for children and the Costume Class. Philipp noted that there will be unique events, such as the fascinating sidesaddle class over fences. More details can be found at aikenhorseshow.org. This year, new merchandise will be available for sale, and a garden bar will be set up at the event in addition to the usual offerings near the tent.
