Air India has launched its first retrofitted A320neo aircraft, named VT-EXN. This plane features a new three-class cabin and modern amenities. The retrofit is part of a larger upgrade program costing $400 million. This initiative aims to enhance the airline’s fleet by 2025, including updates to 27 A320neos and 40 widebody aircraft. The VT-EXN aircraft has new seats, carpets, curtains, and improved cabin ambience. This retrofit was completed last year under the Tata Group’s program. The VT-EXN will be used primarily for domestic flights and short-haul international routes, alongside 14 new A320neo airplanes the airline recently added. By the third quarter of 2025, Air India plans to retrofit all its 27 A320neos. This will include more than 3,500 new Economy Class seats, over 600 Premium Economy seats, and 200 Business Class seats. Additionally, the first renovations of 40 widebody B787 and B777 aircraft are set to begin next month. In related news, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to perform regular seat inspections. This follows criticism of Air India for providing broken seating. In response, Air India has started weekly inspections of seat cushions to ensure they are in good condition. The government confirmed this new inspection program on Monday.
