Air India plans to buy 30-40 new widebody jets
Air India is in talks to purchase 30 to 40 new widebody jets from Boeing and Airbus. The deal could potentially go beyond 50 jets. The airline aims to modernize under the ownership of Tata Group. The jets being considered include the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X models. Final agreements are expected to be made by the Paris Air Show in June. This announcement follows a previous deal in 2023 where Air India ordered 470 planes from both manufacturers, along with an additional 100 Airbus jets the year before. Most of those earlier orders were for smaller, single-aisle aircraft. The new widebody jets would help Air India regain market share lost to competitors. International passenger traffic from India is increasing quickly, with growth expected to be 15-20% this fiscal year. This is higher than the 7-10% growth in domestic travel. Air India is facing competition as global demand for widebody planes grows, especially among fast-expanding airlines. Air India's efforts to transform its services are being followed closely by investors and manufacturers. However, the company is experiencing delays in aircraft deliveries, which makes it difficult to roll out its plans. The airline has struggled with an outdated fleet and poor service for years. Air India CEO Campbell Wilson mentioned that global aircraft shortages could last for four more years. This includes shortages in engines and premium seating. As a result, Air India may need to continue using older aircraft while it works to compete with airlines like Emirates and Lufthansa, which offer newer fleets. In 2025, Air India and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, expect to receive about 20 new narrow and widebody aircraft. Despite recent challenges, Air India aims to improve its reputation and reclaim its position in the market.
