Akkulam Lake project delayed due to contractor concerns
The Akkulam Lake rejuvenation project has faced another setback. The government is considering re-tendering the project due to delays in its start. Concerns have been raised about the experience of the companies involved and the nature of their partnership. Akkulam Lake is heavily covered with water hyacinth, making it look like a meadow. This has persisted despite many past efforts to revive it. Encroachment at the lake's edges has further limited its capacity. The project, which began in 2022, includes plans to improve water quality and infrastructure. The Tourism department is now reviewing whether to re-tender the project. They have sought legal advice about potentially canceling the existing contract. One of the companies involved has requested to continue working on the project after paying a fine for delays. The district administration is still deciding on this request. The overall goal of the project is to revive the lake and enhance the boat club to boost tourism. Plans include removing water hyacinth, desilting the lake, and creating a cleanup system. Infrastructure improvements will also bring amenities like a plaza, open-air theatre, gym, toilets, parking, and water sports facilities. Funding of ₹96 crore has been allocated for the project from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. However, completely removing water hyacinth remains a tough task, as previous cleanup attempts showed that the plants keep returning. Additionally, wastewater from nearby canals continues to pollute the lake.
