Alabama executes Carey Dale Grayson by nitrogen gas for 1994 murder
Carey Dale Grayson, 52, was executed by nitrogen gas on Thursday in Alabama, becoming the third person in the U.S. to die by this method. He was convicted for the 1994 murder of hitchhiker Vickie Deblieux. During his execution, Grayson made an obscene gesture and uttered profane last words. He was pronounced dead at 6:33 PM after the gas replaced breathable air, causing suffocation. Grayson’s execution followed a Supreme Court decision rejecting his request for a stay. His lawyers had argued that the nitrogen method required further examination due to concerns about its effectiveness.
