Alabama executes man using nitrogen gas for 1994 hitchhiker murder
Alabama executed Carey Dale Grayson, 50, using nitrogen gas, marking the state's third use of this method. Grayson was convicted for the 1994 murder of hitchhiker Vickie DeBlieux. He displayed defiance before his execution, cursing at officials. The execution took place at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility. Grayson was pronounced dead about 20 minutes after the gas began flowing. His execution followed a U.S. Supreme Court decision denying his request for a stay, which raised concerns about the nitrogen method. Nitrogen gas was introduced in Alabama earlier this year as an execution method. Grayson was the only one of the four teenagers involved in DeBlieux's murder to receive a death sentence, as the others were under 18 at the time.
