Alabama executes man using nitrogen gas in third U.S. case
Alabama executed Carey Dale Grayson on Thursday, marking the third use of nitrogen gas for an execution in the U.S. Grayson, convicted of a 1994 murder, displayed defiance before his death, cursing at the warden and making obscene gestures. The execution took place at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility. Grayson was pronounced dead about 20 minutes after the nitrogen gas began flowing. His execution followed a U.S. Supreme Court decision denying his request for a stay, which raised concerns about the method's effects. Nitrogen gas was introduced as an execution method in Alabama earlier this year. Grayson was the only one of the four teenagers involved in the murder to receive a death sentence, as the others were under 18 at the time of the crime.
