Alabama inmate Carey Dale Grayson set for execution by nitrogen gas for 1994 murder
Carey Dale Grayson, 49, is set to be executed by nitrogen gas in Alabama on Thursday for the 1994 murder of hitchhiker Vickie Lynn Deblieux. Grayson was 19 at the time, while his three accomplices were under 18 and received life sentences instead. Grayson chose nitrogen hypoxia as his method of execution, which has faced criticism after a previous execution raised concerns about its effectiveness. This will be Alabama's sixth execution this year, with Grayson being the 22nd inmate executed nationwide in 2024. Grayson has a history of bipolar disorder, but a psychologist testified that he understood his actions during the crime. His last chance to avoid execution lies with the U.S. Supreme Court or Alabama's governor, who has shown little sympathy for him.
