Alappuzha enhances flood control with canal expansion

Alappuzha's Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine announced new efforts to improve flood control in the region. This includes the ongoing development of the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) Canal. The first phase of this project, from Manakkachira to Onamkara, has already been completed. The second and third phases will extend the canal further to Nedumudy and Pallathuruthy. There is also a focus on clearing encroachments and widening the canal to hold more water. Augustine responded to Kuttanad MLA Thomas K. Thomas, who called for renovations of the AC Canal and nearby water bodies, including Vembanad Lake. The Minister emphasized that the second phase will help manage water flow during heavy rains and reduce flood risks in the Kuttanad area. However, he noted that some design limitations in the canal could restrict its flood management capabilities. To enhance flood control, the government plans to deepen and widen parts of the canal. Additionally, the government is taking steps to restore Vembanad Lake. The lake has suffered from sludge, silt, and hyacinths since the 2018 floods, which has decreased its effectiveness in managing seasonal flooding. A new initiative aims to remove about 50 lakh cubic meters of sludge and silt from the lake and its canals. This cleanup will not only help with flood control but also increase fish production in the area.
