Alaska photographers capture stunning blood moon eclipse aurora
On March 13, 2025, photographers in northern Alaska captured stunning images of a "blood moon" total lunar eclipse alongside the aurora. This rare event lasted 65 minutes, with a substorm enhancing the aurora's brightness during totality. Astrophotographer Dan Zafra traveled to Alaska to photograph the eclipse, hoping for clear skies and aurora activity. His efforts paid off as he captured multiple angles of the celestial events, which coincided due to the sun's solar maximum period. Other photographers, like Todd Salat, also documented the eclipse against the aurora backdrop. The timing of the aurora's appearance during the eclipse was noted as particularly fortunate, contributing to the unique visual experience.
