Alberta man charged with second-degree murder in Waterdown

A man from Alberta has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of a father of two in Waterdown. Police found the victim, identified as 55-year-old Dirk Nyhuis, inside his home after a friend requested a wellness check on the night of March 6. He was discovered with fatal gunshot wounds. Cory Mahoney, 40, was arrested in Calgary and is now facing charges related to Nyhuis's death. Officials stated that Mahoney and Nyhuis had mutual friends and had known each other. Mahoney had been invited to Nyhuis's home on the day of the shooting. The motive for the shooting is still unclear. Investigators noted that Mahoney was in Ontario for a few days before the incident.
