Alex Bregman signs three-year deal with Boston Red Sox
Alex Bregman, the infielder who recently turned down a six-year, $156 million offer from the Houston Astros, has made headlines with his last-minute decision in free agency. After considering several teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Bregman ultimately signed with the Boston Red Sox. Reports suggested that the Tigers were interested in Bregman and offered him a more lucrative deal of $171.5 million over six years. However, Bregman found himself swept up in a rapid series of decisions that led him to Boston. He shared his experience on the show "Foul Territory," noting, “It was kind of crazy. Everything just happened in the last 30 minutes.” Despite a bigger offer from Detroit, Bregman chose a shorter contract with the Red Sox. His agent, Scott Boras, mentioned that Bregman had many options, but the allure of Boston and its potential benefits influenced his choice. They finalized a three-year, $120 million contract with opt-out clauses for 2025 and 2026. Bregman’s previous connection with Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who coached him during his time with the Astros, also played a role in his decision. As he joined spring training, Bregman began training at third base, the position where he excelled last year. Meanwhile, the Tigers still face uncertainty about their third base situation as the season approaches.
