Allahabad lawyers oppose Justice Verma's transfer decision
The High Court Bar Association (HCBA) in Allahabad has called for a meeting to discuss the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma. This follows reports of a large amount of cash found at his home. Anil Tiwari, the president of the HCBA, urged all lawyers to attend the meeting on Monday. He highlighted that the situation is critical for the judiciary's integrity. Tiwari pointed out a disparity in handling cases of corruption, stating if a government official is found with ₹15 lakh, they face jail time, but when a judge has ₹15 crore, the response is different. The HCBA issued a letter on Friday opposing Justice Varma’s transfer back to the Allahabad High Court. The letter noted the court is already struggling with a backlog of cases and a shortage of judges. The Bar Association is concerned that the situation could undermine public trust in the judicial system. They suspect there may be a scheme to weaken the Allahabad High Court. The urgent meeting will take place at 1:15 PM on Monday to decide on the next steps.
