Alva Smith recognized for contributions to children's education
Alva Swafford Smith is a prominent figure in the Tallahassee community. She has been recognized as one of the "25 Women You Need to Know for 2025" due to her dedicated work in public education and nonprofit leadership. Alva’s journey in education has not been a straight path. She emphasizes that careers can take unexpected turns. She has taken time off for her family and later found new opportunities. Alva started her career as a teacher at Deerlake Middle School and later became a member of the Leon County School Board, where she serves District 1. Her commitment to education is clear. Alva has a strong desire to support teachers and students, especially those at Title I schools. Recently, she organized a book drive that raised $30,000 to donate over 3,000 books to schools in need. This initiative aimed to improve literacy resources and strengthen community ties. Aside from her role on the school board, Alva is the Executive Director of the Tallahassee Bar Association, managing over 400 members. She has also worked to enhance educational opportunities for adult learners at Florida State University and served as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Alva's passion for helping others goes beyond her professional life. She is a living kidney donor, having helped a friend in need by giving a kidney and extending his life. In her personal time, she enjoys outdoor activities like golf and cycling with her husband, George. Alva loves the natural beauty of Tallahassee and values community engagement. She is always looking to make a positive impact and support children in her community.
