Amazon leads $500 million investment in nuclear energy with X-energy
Summary: Amazon is leading a $500 million investment in X-energy to develop small modular nuclear reactors. This initiative aims to provide carbon-free energy for data centers in Washington and Virginia, addressing rising energy demands.
This investment follows similar moves by Microsoft and Google, who are also exploring nuclear energy to support their AI operations. Microsoft recently backed plans to reopen the Three Mile Island plant, while Google partnered with Kairos Power on modular reactor technology.
X-energy's modular reactors are designed to be easily transportable and scalable. The first installation in Washington will start with four reactors, generating 320 megawatts, with potential expansion to 12 units for 960 megawatts.
