Amazon partners to develop nuclear power for data center energy needs
Summary: Amazon.com has signed three agreements to develop small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet rising electricity demands for its data centers. The company will fund a feasibility study for an SMR project in Washington state, partnering with X-Energy.
Under the agreements, Amazon can purchase electricity from four SMR modules, with the option for additional capacity. This project could generate enough power for over 770,000 homes. Amazon is also leading a $500 million funding round for X-Energy's SMR development.
This move follows a trend among tech firms seeking nuclear power solutions as data center energy use is expected to triple by 2030. Other companies, including Google and Microsoft, are also pursuing similar nuclear projects.
