Amazon signs agreements to develop nuclear power for data centers
Summary: Amazon.com has signed three agreements to develop small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear power technology, aiming to meet rising electricity demands for its data centers. This marks a shift as major tech companies explore new energy sources.
The company plans to fund a feasibility study for an SMR project in Washington state, developed by X-Energy. Amazon will have the option to purchase electricity from four modules, with potential expansion to eight more, totaling up to 960 MW.
Currently, no SMRs are operational in the U.S. NuScale, the only company with an SMR design license, recently canceled its first project. Concerns remain about the cost and long-term waste management of SMRs.
