Amazon signs agreements to develop small modular nuclear reactors
Summary: Amazon has signed three agreements to develop small modular reactors (SMRs), which are quicker to build and can be located closer to power grids. This follows similar investments in nuclear power by Microsoft and Google.
One agreement involves Energy Northwest to create four SMRs, initially generating 320 megawatts, with a potential of 960 megawatts. Another partnership with X-energy focuses on advanced reactor design, while a third explores an SMR project with Dominion Energy in Virginia, potentially adding 300 megawatts.
Amazon claims these projects will create jobs, including 1,000 temporary construction positions and about 100 permanent roles. Earlier this year, Amazon announced it met its renewable energy goals ahead of schedule, though some employees and experts questioned the accuracy of this claim.
