Americans can claim $781 tax refunds by April 15
Americans have until April 15 to file their 2021 tax returns and claim potential refunds. About 1.1 million people have not filed, leaving over $1 billion in unclaimed refunds, with a median refund of $781. In New York, around 73,000 residents missed the 2021 deadline, with more than $72 million in refunds unclaimed. The median refund for New Yorkers is $995, higher than the national median. To receive a refund, residents must file their 2021 returns and also submit their 2022 and 2023 returns. Tax forms and instructions are available on the IRS website or by phone.
